The Federal Government has evacuated 1,230 stranded Nigerians from Niger Republic in a coordinated humanitarian effort led by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In an official statement, the ministry said the operation reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of Nigerians living abroad, particularly in times of distress.

According to the ministry, the evacuees returned in two batches—708 on March 23 and 522 on March 29—marking the successful completion of the exercise.

The evacuation was carried out in partnership with the International Organization for Migration, whose logistical and technical support ensured a smooth and orderly process. The ministry noted that the collaboration highlights Nigeria’s continued engagement with international organisations in addressing migration-related challenges.

Upon arrival in Kano, the returnees were received by a multi-agency team comprising officials from the National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Immigration Service, and other humanitarian and security bodies, including the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons.

The government said the coordinated reception demonstrates the importance of inter-agency collaboration in managing humanitarian situations effectively.

Profiling follows evacuation

After arrival, the evacuees underwent profiling and documentation before being moved to temporary accommodation at the Immigration Training School in Kano.

Authorities provided essential support, including meals, sanitary materials, and basic medical care where necessary.

The ministry confirmed that the returnees have since been reunited with their families after completing reintegration procedures, noting that the effort reflects a broader commitment not only to evacuation but also to humane resettlement.

The Federal Government also expressed appreciation to authorities in Niger Republic for their cooperation, describing the exercise as a reflection of strong bilateral relations.

It further acknowledged the contributions of international partners, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, in ensuring the mission’s success.

Nigerians living abroad were advised to remain law-abiding, maintain contact with Nigerian missions, and register with embassies to enable timely assistance during emergencies.
