Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from office, expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.

In a resignation letter submitted to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Tuggar said his tenure was guided by the administration’s 4D foreign policy strategy.

“I express my profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the nation and to contribute to the implementation of the President’s 4D foreign policy strategy,” he stated.

The former minister also appreciated the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their support during his time in office.

“I sincerely appreciate the cooperation and support I received throughout my tenure,” he added.

Tuggar’s resignation comes ahead of the March 31 deadline set for political office holders to step down in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and directives from the President.

During his tenure, Tuggar was credited with advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives through people-centred diplomacy, including humanitarian evacuations, scholarship facilitation, and sustained support for Nigerians in the diaspora.

His administration also focused on strengthening diaspora engagement through initiatives such as the development of a structured Nigerians-in-Diaspora database.

On the global stage, the former minister deepened Nigeria’s bilateral and multilateral relations, particularly with partners in the Global South, while promoting regional cooperation and democratic governance frameworks.

He was also noted for driving economic diplomacy aimed at positioning Nigeria as an attractive destination for foreign investment, especially in the energy sector, as well as facilitating diplomatic interventions that secured the release of detained Nigerians abroad.

The resignation letter was received on behalf of the SGF’s office by Dr. Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office.
