The Catholic Diocese of Awka has confirmed the death of one of its priests, Rev. Fr. Michael Oli, who reportedly died on March 26, 2026, in the United States.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on March 27 by the Chancellor of the diocese, Charles Ndubisi.
According to the statement, the priest died suddenly after reportedly feeling unwell.
“With confidence in the Resurrection of the Lord, I write to inform you of the sudden death of our brother, Fr. Michael Oli,” the statement read.
The diocese said it had been in contact with authorities in Meade County, where an autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
“At this point, the cause of death is yet to be ascertained,” it added.
The Bishop of Rapid City Diocese, Scott Bullock, also confirmed the development, noting that investigations were ongoing.
Until his death, the late cleric served as Administrator of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Faith, South Dakota. He was ordained on Aug. 23, 2008.
The diocese called on priests and faithful to pray for the repose of his soul, urging priests within the diocese to offer three Masses in his honour.
