Apple CEO urges reduced phone use, promotes human interaction

Chief Executive Officer of Apple, Tim Cook, has advised smartphone users to reduce screen time and prioritise real-life interactions and outdoor activities.

Cook gave the advice during an interview on Good Morning America with host Michael Strahan.

He reflected on the company’s 50-year legacy and its initiatives, including support for school music programmes through its partnership with Save The Music.

He stressed the importance of balancing technology use with human connection and engagement with nature.

“I don’t want people using them too much,” Cook said, referring to smartphones.

“I don’t want people looking at the smartphone more than they’re looking in someone’s eyes, as if they’re scrolling endlessly.

“This is not how you want to spend your day. Go out and spend it in nature,” he said.

Meanwhile, a study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry noted that while smartphones have become an integral part of daily life, excessive use could have adverse effects.

According to the study, overuse of smartphones may lead to physical discomfort as well as feelings of loneliness, anxiety and depression.

The authors emphasised the need for moderation to mitigate the negative impacts associated with prolonged screen time.
