The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, has strongly condemned the assault on a staff member of Albarka Radio in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, allegedly carried out by police officers during the Sallah celebration.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, the union described the attack as barbaric and unacceptable, stressing that it represents a grave violation of human rights and a direct affront to press freedom.

The council said the incident reflects a disturbing level of misconduct by officers who are duty-bound to protect citizens, not inflict harm.

It noted that the development is particularly troubling at a time the NUJ is advocating greater professionalism and accountability among security agencies.

The union called on the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that all officers involved are appropriately sanctioned.

It further demanded that the Bauchi State Police Command take full responsibility for the victim’s medical treatment and settle all related expenses without delay.

The NUJ warned that failure to meet these demands would compel it to convene an emergency congress to determine its next course of action.

The council also urged media organisations across the state to remain vigilant and await further directives, assuring that it will pursue justice until the safety and dignity of journalists are fully protected.

Reaffirming its stance, the union declared that it will not tolerate any form of intimidation, harassment, or brutality against journalists under any circumstances.
