President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to confront insecurity across Nigeria, declaring that the government will not allow security challenges to undermine efforts aimed at supporting the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
Speaking on Sunday at his Lagos residence during an Eid-el-Fitr gathering with Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors, Tinubu said tackling insecurity remains a top priority of his government. He noted that discussions during his recent visit to the United Kingdom were largely focused on strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and enhancing citizens’ safety.
The President revealed ongoing efforts to secure international partnerships to boost Nigeria’s security capabilities. He disclosed that he recently held extensive talks with Emmanuel Macron on providing modern security equipment and technical support, adding that engagements with other countries are also underway.
“Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress and prosperity. We must confront it decisively to ensure that our citizens can live and thrive in peace,” Tinubu said, stressing the need for collective action among all levels of government.
Despite the security concerns, the President emphasised that social welfare remains a critical focus. He warned that the ongoing Middle East crisis could trigger inflationary pressures, particularly on energy and transportation, thereby affecting the purchasing power of Nigerians. Tinubu urged governors to implement measures that would cushion the impact on citizens, especially the poor and vulnerable.
“We must care more for the vulnerable,” he said, noting that economic shocks from global conflicts could increase demands on government support systems.
Governors tasked on commitment
Tinubu also called on state governors to remain committed to translating policies into tangible benefits for citizens, while intensifying efforts to combat criminal activities. He commended Vice President Shettima for his recent condolence visit to Borno State and assured residents of enhanced protection through the deployment of modern security technology.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, praised the President’s leadership and the outcomes of his UK State Visit. He described the trip as a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations and attracting investment.
AbdulRazaq added that governors are actively contributing to ongoing discussions on the establishment of state police, with plans to submit a legislative framework to the National Assembly.
The meeting underscored a unified commitment by federal and state governments to address insecurity while sustaining efforts to protect the welfare of Nigerians.
