Tensions soar in Middle East as Israel claims killing of Iran security chief

Israel’s Defence Minister has announced that the country’s military killed Iranian security chief Ali Larijani in a targeted strike, a claim yet to be confirmed by Iran.

Larijani, a prominent figure in Iran’s political and security establishment, was last seen publicly during a Quds Day march in Tehran on Friday.

Iranian authorities have not clarified whether he was killed or injured in the reported attack.

The development comes amid escalating hostilities across the region.

In Iraq, drones and rockets were fired at the United States embassy in Baghdad, marking the second such since the conflict intensified.

Airspace disruptions have also spread, with the United Arab Emirates temporarily shutting down its skies over missile and drone threats linked to Iran.

Authorities have since reopened the airspace as the situation stabilised.

Air travel remains affected, as British Airways announced the suspension of some Middle East flights until the end of May, citing ongoing uncertainty and security concerns.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed calls for greater international involvement, urging NATO allies to help secure the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route.

In a joint diplomatic response, leaders of the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy warned that any major Israeli ground offensive in Lebanon could trigger “devastating humanitarian consequences,” underscoring growing global concern over the widening crisis.
