The Federal Government has begun consultations on plans to introduce age limits for social media use as part of efforts to improve online safety for children.

The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy launched a public survey to gather opinions from parents, teachers and young people on how best to regulate children’s access to social media platforms.

The ministry is also seeking contributions from digital experts as part of efforts to develop an effective regulatory approach.

It said the consultation is aimed at developing a balanced policy framework that protects children from online risks.

“The framework would still allow children to benefit from the educational and social opportunities provided by internet access,” it said.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the government is working to ensure that minors are better protected as internet usage continues to expand across the country.

Tijani noted that the internet offers opportunities for learning, creativity and communication.

He warned, however, that it also exposes children to risks such as cyberbullying, harmful content, online exploitation and misuse of personal data.

“There are also emerging threats linked to artificial intelligence tools that could affect minor.

“Public input would be crucial in shaping the proposed regulations.

“The government is exploring measures including age limits, enhanced age-verification systems, increased accountability for digital platforms, and stricter regulatory oversight,”he said
