Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal dumps PDP for APC, cites party crisis

Zamfara Governor

The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after what he described as extensive consultations with political stakeholders across the state.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Director-General of Media and Communication in the Office of the Governor, Nuhu Salihu Anka, at the Government House in Gusau.

According to the statement, the governor’s decision followed wide-ranging consultations with political leaders, elders and supporters across Zamfara State.

The move, it said, was aimed at promoting stability, progress and sustainable development in the state.

The statement explained that the defection was largely influenced by the prolonged internal crisis, leadership disagreements and unresolved structural challenges within the PDP at both the national and state levels.

These issues, it noted, had created uncertainty and distractions capable of affecting effective governance.

Governor Lawal maintained that his foremost responsibility remains the peace, security and development of Zamfara State.

Aligning for unity

He stressed that aligning with a political platform that guarantees greater unity and stronger collaboration with the Federal Government would better serve the interests of the people.

The statement further revealed that the final consultations leading to the decision were held at the Government House in Gusau and coordinated by the Deputy Governor, alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.

While appreciating members and supporters of the PDP for their support over the years, Lawal said prevailing political realities and unresolved challenges within the party made the decision necessary in the interest of good governance and the future of the state.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening unity, improving security and accelerating development in Zamfara State through enhanced cooperation with the Federal Government.

The state government also called on citizens, political leaders and party supporters to remain calm and peaceful as Zamfara enters what it described as a new political phase aimed at promoting unity, stability and development.
