Anambra roads: FRSC, NDLEA warn drivers against drunk driving

FRSC-NDLEA

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, on Wednesday sensitised drivers, fleet managers and passengers on the dangers of drunk driving and drug abuse.

The sensitisation in Awka, was in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, said the exercise was a reminder that driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs poses serious risks to lives and property.

Asekhauno tasked drivers and park operators to discourage the sale and consumption of alcohol and drugs within motor parks.

According to her, 2025 statistics indicated that drunk driving and speeding were leading causes of road traffic crashes in the country.

“We are here to talk to drivers, fleet managers and passengers to remind them that drunk driving is dangerous.

“We also brought breathalysers to test drivers and determine the level of alcohol in their blood. The permissible blood alcohol level is 0.5 per cent,” she said.

Collaboration with NDLEA

She describe as very strategic the collaboration with NDLEA.

“This is because driving requires full concentration, which could be impaired by alcohol and other drugs.”

Mrs Priscilla Onyenma, Officer in charge of Training, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Anambra State Command, presented a paper on the occasion.

She said the sensitisation was to educate drivers on the health and safety implications of drug consumption.

Onyonma warned that substance abuse could affect judgment, coordination and reaction time, thereby increasing the likelihood of road accidents.

Dr Reginald Facah, Coordinator, MTN/CCGE/Community Liaison Initiative, said the organisation was committed to promoting road safety and responsible driving habits.

Facah said the initiative was to ensure that drivers avoid drinking and driving and adhere strictly to safe driving ethics.

This he noted would help to preserve lives and property.

Responding on behalf of transport operators, Mr Oje Alexander, Logistics Manager, Rivers Joy Travel and Tour, commended FRSC and NDLEA for the enlightenment.

Alexander said the company’s policy does not allow any driver seen with alcohol bottles to load or drive vehicles.

FRSC officials tested drivers at various parks visited with a breathalyser.
