The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) in its 25th meeting has taken far-reaching decisions to safeguard the environment, protect public assets, and improve critical infrastructure across the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, who disclosed this in a press release, said the Council once again underscored that erosion remains an existential threat to Anambra State.

The council attributed its worsening impact to the careless actions of some individuals, communities, and even regulatory bodies that disregard environmental regulations.

The release cites practices such as channeling stormwater from private residences onto public roads, where it accumulates and accelerates erosion.

Mefor said ANSEC also resolved to intensify enforcement measures to ensure that property owners properly manage stormwater within their premises.

It also compelled communities to adhere strictly to approved guidelines, including the construction of erosion control barriers and the excavation of sand only in designated locations.

On the issue of public assets, the Commissioner revealed that the Council, after considering reports of widespread encroachment on government lands, approved the establishment of a committee to recover and reclaim government-owned lands unlawfully occupied or developed across the state.

Approvals for strategic projects

Dr Mefor further announced that Council approved the release of funds for several strategic projects.

These include the sum of ₦95,239,056.80 for the provision of water supply to the Ekwulobia Flyover Bridge Fountain and ornamental garden, awarded to Double NC Construction & Logistics Ltd.

Also approved is the release of ₦172,028,797.10 for landscaping the car park of the Trauma Centre at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, awarded to Triseconds Resources Ltd.

In addition, Council approved ₦93,416,220.52 for the installation of a three-way traffic light, including pedestrian lights, at the Ifite-Amenyi intersection within Awka metropolis, awarded to S.N.U. Ventures.

The council also approved ₦50,449,487.93 for the supply and installation of two 10 kVA inverters with 15 kW lithium batteries at the Anambra State Civil Service Commission Building, Awka, awarded to Kennolly Enterprises.

Furthermore, ANSEC approved the release of ₦119,111,045.97 for the supply and installation of transformer substations at two locations in Nnewi and Umueze-Anam communities, awarded to Aries and Gold Ventures Ltd and Aljovic Construction Ltd.

Dr Mefor noted that the decisions taken at the meeting reflect the commitment of the Anambra State Government to environmental sustainability, infrastructure development, and the protection of public assets for the benefit of Ndi Anambra.
