The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has condemned the reported attack on a Government Girls School in Maga community, Kebbi State.
This was contained in a statement by Sussan Akila, Communication Specialist, UNICEF Nigeria, on Tuesday.
The statement said the attack led to the killing of the school’s Vice-Principal and the abduction of 25 students.
It described the incident as a tragic reminder of the urgent need to strengthen the protection of children, schools and education personnel across Nigeria.
“We stand with the affected community at this difficult time.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to those who have lost their loved ones, and we wish a full recovery for the injured,”it said.
The agency called for the swift and safe release of the abducted students.
It stressed that children, educational facilities and staff are protected under international law and must not be targets of violence.
UNICEF recalled that Nigeria endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration in 2015.
“The declaration outlines measures to maintain the civilian nature of schools and ensure safe access to education during conflict.
“We urge stakeholders to intensify efforts toward fully implementing the declaration,” it said.
UNICEF said it is working with government partners, civil society and communities to strengthen child-protection systems.
“There is need to promote safe, inclusive learning environments nationwide.
“These structures must be reinforced to prevent future tragedies.
“No child should be put at risk while pursuing an education,” the statement added.
