A Catholic cleric, Rev Fr Peter Ezeji Uzoma has expressed concerns over neglect of priests by members of their congregation despite their shepherding responsibilities.

Uzoma raised the lamentation at the 25th year priestly ordination celebration of Director of Justice, Development, and Peace Commission/Carnitas (JDPC) Nnewi Catholic Diocese, Rev Fr Benedict Chima Madubuko Okolo.

He said there was serious need for prayers for priests majorly abandoned and neglected by the same people they were daily risking their lives for.

The priest recalled critical periods when persons flee their communities for fear of the unknown occasioned by insecurity while the priests like soldiers remain at their duty posts amidst serious threats to their lives.

He likened a priest to a soldier in the war front battling seen and unseen enemies and forces.

He stressed the need to thank God on behalf of Rev Fr Okolo who he said had remained true to his calling for the past 25 years.

Prayer solicited

“I appeal to the people of God to continue to pray for Very Rev Fr Dr Benedict Okolo to continue to live holy life and continue to carry out the responsibility of his priestly ordination,” he said.

Responding, Okolo, ordained on August 19th, 2000 appreciated all who contributed to ensure the success of the occasion, including priests, Rev Sisters and others who sacrificed time to grace the ceremony.

The high point of the reception was presentation of a brand new Toyota Corolla and other mouth-watering gifts to the celebrant.

Speaking with newsmen, former President General of Nnewichi-Nnewi, Chief Cyril Okolo thanked God for His sustaining grace upon his brother who has been serving faithfully for 25 years.

The event took place at St Peter Claver’s Parish, Odida Nnewichi, Nnewi in Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State.
