The Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area in Enugu State, Dr. Eric Odo, has inaugurated the revitalised Greater Ukehe Water Scheme.
The ceremony which held at Ukehe, featured the reticulation of 17 new water pump galleries across the communities.
The council originally launched the water scheme in 1995, and it served residents until its pump system failed in 2011.

Odo said the revitalisation of the project fulfilled Gov. Peter Mbah’s 2022 campaign promise to the people of Igbo-Etiti East.
He explained that the revamped facility would ensure steady water supply to Ukehe and neighbouring communities.
According to him, the newly reticulated galleries, spanning over six kilometres along Old Federal Road, would make potable water easily accessible to residents.
“When I assumed office in Sept. 2024, I promised to end the long years of water scarcity in Igbo-Etiti.
“I’m happy that today, that promise has become a reality.
“The project fulfils the people’s dream as they now have access to clean water which is a basic right, not a privilege.
“These water galleries are strategically located so that no resident walks a long distance to fetch water.
“This is about making life easier and healthier for our people,” he added.
Odo assured that his administration would extend similar interventions to other communities in the area.
According to him, this will ensure every household had access to functional water sources.

Also speaking, Dr. Chibuike Iyi, project contractor, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work.
Iyi stated that they used modern technology and durable materials to guarantee the water scheme’s longevity and efficiency.
“This facility was built to last and reflects the chairman’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure,” Iyi said.
In his remarks, Mr. Ben-Collins Ndu, Commissioner for Water Resources, commended the stare government for its dedication to improving rural infrastructure.
Ndu urged the communities to safeguard the facility against vandalism.
Similarly, Mrs. Chika Mbah, Managing Director, Enugu State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, encouraged the beneficiaries to take ownership of the project and ensure its sustainability.
Responding on behalf of residents of the area, Mr. Linus Nwaeze, applauded Gov Mbah and Odo for restoring access to safe drinking water.
“We thank God for using them to end the long-standing water scarcity in Ukehe and its environs,” he said.
