Federal Government has officially recognized Anambra State as the most proactive and effective state in tackling erosion, waste management and environmental degradation across Nigeria.

Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balaraba Lawal made the commendation during the launch of the European Investment Bank-assisted Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP) held over the weekend in Abuja.

NEWMAP is a collaborative initiative between the European Investment Bank and the Nigerian Government.

It is designed to combat the escalating threats of flooding, soil erosion, and land degradation affecting vulnerable communities nationwide.

The project is backed by a significant €175 million investment.

The Minister praised Anambra’s “unprecedented community-driven initiatives, rapid response to erosion threats, and model waste management systems.

He described them as a national example worth emulating.

“This recognition is not just symbolic. It reflects Anambra’s practical, measurable impact in reversing years of ecological damage. The state has set a new benchmark for environmental governance in Nigeria.”

Responding, Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu, attributed the success to government agencies, people of the state and development partners.

“This is a victory for every community that chose action over apathy. We will continue to lead with urgency and innovation,” he added.

Odimegwu assured both the Minister and EU delegation of Anambra’s ongoing commitment to innovative policies and sustained environmental protection efforts.

Environmental experts and civil society groups also commended the Federal Government for recognizing Anambra’s achievements.

He urged other states to emulate its model in addressing Nigeria’s growing environmental challenges.
