The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has officially concluded his second tenure in office today.
It marked the end of his ten-year leadership of the electoral body.
This was done in a brief handover ceremony held during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Tuesday.
Yakubu transferred leadership to INEC National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as the Acting Chairman of the Commission.
Agbamuche-Mbu’s appointment follows the expiration of Yakubu’s tenure, pending the formal appointment of a substantive chairman by the President.
Yakubu, who first assumed office in 2015 and was reappointed for a second term in 2020, oversaw two general elections and several off-cycle polls during his time as INEC chairman.
The ceremony was attended by top INEC officials and marked the beginning of a transition phase for the Commission as it awaits new leadership.
