A research team from the Sahelian Institute For Bamboo Research And Entrepreneurship Development (SIBRED) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has made a significant impact at the 3rd quarterly National Council Meeting of the Nigeria Chambers of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).
The two-day event, held at the International Convention Centre in Awka from August 27-28, 2025, provided a platform for SIBRED to showcase its innovative eco-friendly products derived from native bamboo in Anambra State.
The products on display included bamboo charcoal soap, bamboo ash soap, bamboo leaf extract soap, bamboo leaf tea, and bamboo-based body oils and creams.
Dr. Onyekachi Ibezim, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, who represented Governor Chukwuma Soludo, visited the SIBRED stand accompanied by the Commissioner of Industry.
Dr. Ibezim expressed satisfaction with the value-added products exhibited, highlighting the potential of bamboo resources in promoting entrepreneurship and sustainable development in the state.
In a significant endorsement, the National President of NACCIMA, Dr. Jani Ibrahim, praised SIBRED-UNIZIK’s eco-friendly products made from bamboo raw materials.
Boost to SIBRED
This endorsement is expected to boost the institute’s efforts in promoting sustainable entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
Addressing newsmen on the sideline of the meeting, the Director SIBRED, Dr John Ogbodo said the participation of SIBRED at the meeting demonstrates UNIZIK’s commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship development under the leadership of Prof. Carol Arinze Umobi, the Acting. Vice Chancellor.

“The event provided a platform for stakeholders to engage with SIBRED’s products and explore opportunities for collaboration and growth.
“As the first university-based centre of excellence focusing on bamboo and rattan value chain development in Africa, SIBRED’s presence at the meeting was a testament to its growing influence in the region,” Ogbodo submitted.
The SIBRED team was led by the Director, Dr. John Ogbodo, and Deputy Director, Dr. Adaeze Nnedinma Achugbu, who were accompanied by a team of Research Associates and interns.
