Member representing Awka North and South Constituency in the National Assembly, Prof Lilian Orogbu on Friday empowered no fewer than 500 widows under her constituency.

The women, drawn from across her constituency, were empowered with cash sum as start-up capital for their chosen businesses.

Speaking during the empowerment in Awka, Orogbu said the widows’ support tagged “Ego Afia” was part of activities marking her birthday celebration.

She listed her achievements in less than two years of leadership to include construction and renovation of roads, schools, town halls, Police station, boreholes, transformers, street lights, among other projects scattered across the constituency.

Describing the widows as Jesus’ wives, Orogbu pledged more dividends in the years ahead as her Non-governmental organisation would focus on them.

She further called for their support ahead of the 2027 general election, vowing not to disappoint them, if re-elected.

She said, “I was not qualified for the position, but God who qualifies the unqualified made it happen, despite all the gang-ups.

Call for support

Orogbu said, “They’ve started again ahead of 2027, with promises of one-term. It has never happened in our constituency, and it can’t start with my turn.

“It’s God that gives life and power. So, nobody should brag about it. Come 2027 I will defeat my opponents 2-times of what I did in 2023. We’re ready for them.

“Out of 360 that won election, only 14 women are in the House. It’s your responsibility to ensure your fellow woman go again.

Some widows on the occasion

“I know you won’t disappoint me. Even men are fighting for my return,” she said.

Earlier, Director Awka South Constituency Office, Obiora Okafor commended the lawmaker’s giant strides across the constituency, describing her as Mrs Project.

Obiora who chaired the occasion was particularly excited with the quality of projects being executed by the lawmaker.

For him, it would only be wise to return her to ensure sustainability.
