Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday, declared Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) winner of the Aug.16, Anambra South Senatorial by-election.

Nwachukwu pooled 90,408 votes to defeat Chief Azuka Okwuosa of All Progressive Congress (APC) who scored 19,812 votes.

Mr Donald Amamgbo of African Democratic Congress (ADC) emerged third with 2,889 votes.

INEC Retuning Officer, Prof. Frank Ojiako announced the results at the collation centre in Nnewi North.

“I hereby make the declaration that Emmanuel Nwachukwu of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected, “Ojiako said.

The election was keenly contested by about 12 political parties to

The bye-election was to get a replacement following the death of   Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the Senate, in July, 2024.

Late Ubah, who had won re-election in 2023 under the platform of Young Progressive Party (YPP)  later joined APC before his death.

Nwachukwu is the first APGA candidate to win a Senatorial poll in  Anambra South senatorial district.

The former President-General of Ukpor will also become the first person from Nnewi South to occupy the position upon inauguration.

The first person to win a Senatorial position under the APGA platform in Anambra State was Sen. Victor Umeh of the Anambra Central.

Umeh won a Senatorial re-run conducted on Jan.13, 2018, replacing Sen. Uche Ekwunife of PDP whose party was barred from participating by the Court that annuled her victory at 2015 general election.

Before then, elections in the three Senatorial districts in Anambra  were usually won by the PDP candidates

But in 2011, former Gov. Chris Ngige of the Anambra Central broke the record with Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
