The Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has attributed the rising level of domestic violence to the growing economic hardship in many households.
She made this statement during the 3rd Anambra State Women’s Health Summit, held in Awka and organised through her pet project, the Healthy Living Initiative.
The event was hosted in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
Soludo emphasised that families can overcome such traumatic experiences by fostering mutual respect and instilling the same values in their children.
“There is hardship in the land we both men and women are feeling it.
“But I want to advise our women to talk less, respect your husbands and carry yourself well before them.
“Talking carelessly can lead a hot tempered man to hit you. So you must know when to talk.
“Look for a way to settle with your husband much after when you have issues, and not at the very heat of an argument.
“Women are intelligent. While the man may be considered the head, the woman is the neck—she guides and influences the direction the head turns.
“However, this influence must be exercised with subtlety and wisdom; if it becomes overbearing, it can lead to conflict,” she said.
The event featured health experts who spoke on nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding, reproductive health and immunisation uptake

.
Also speaking the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, said the summit reflects Anambra’s strong commitment to improving the health of women and children.
During the summit, women received free medical services, including eye examinations and eyeglasses.
It also featured screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, cervical cancer, and breast cancer.
