The Federal Government has officially withdrawn its criminal complaint against Ms. Comfort Emmanson.
Emmanson is the Ibom Air passenger whose alleged unruly behavior on a flight on Sunday, Aug. 10, drew nationwide attention.
Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, made the announcement in a statement released on Wednesday.
Keyamo cited consultations with key aviation stakeholders and parties involved in recent airport incidents.
He explained that the events have sparked crucial public conversations around acceptable behavior in airports and on flights.
It also sparked conversations around the exposed lapses in current security protocols.
He acknowledged that investigations revealed fault on both sides — among airline staff and passengers.
He, however emphasized the importance of shared accountability.
The Minister noted that the decision to withdraw the complaint was influenced by appeals from respected individuals and the sincere remorse shown by Ms. Emmanson.
“When the police recorded her statement in the presence of her lawyer, she expressed deep regret for her actions,” he stated.
Keyamo further disclosed that arrangements are underway to secure Ms. Emmanson’s release from Kirikiri Prisons within the week.
Additionally, he confirmed that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have agreed to lift the lifetime flight ban imposed on Emmanson, with a formal statement expected soon.
