The special committee set up by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, has submitted its report.
The minister constituted the committee earlier this year to tackle the rising cases of boat mishaps across Nigeria’s inland waterways.
Receiving the report in Abuja, the Minister described the loss of lives on Nigerian waters as not just a policy failure but a moral concern.
“The safety of our citizens on water is not just a policy responsibility but also a moral duty,” Oyetola said.
“Every life lost in a boat mishap is one too many.”
The Minister noted that the repeated incidents underscored the urgent need for a sustained and coordinated response to enhance water safety, enforce regulations, and rebuild public trust in water transport.
Mr Oyetola commended the committee for its thoroughness and professionalism.
He acknowledged the depth of research involved in the report, including data analysis and field assessments.
The minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is committed to implementing the recommendations with the urgency and seriousness they deserve.
Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Bola Onyebamiji, explained that the committee engaged in wide consultations with stakeholders in the maritime sector.
These include boat operators, regulatory agencies, and affected communities, before arriving at its recommendations.
He said the report highlights the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, improved surveillance systems, and enhanced training for boat operators.
Oyebamiji appealed to the minister for the review and implementation of the reports to promote safety and restore public confidence in water transportation.
