The Health Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) has urged governments, healthcare providers, and communities to view breastfeeding as a public health necessity, not just a personal choice.
The group made the call in a statement signed by HEWAN President and Secretary, Vivian Ihechu and Temitope Obayendo respectively, and released on Friday.
It was to mark World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), celebrated annually from August 1 to 7.
WBW is marked to raise awareness and action around the critical role of breastfeeding in maternal and child health.
This year’s commemoration has the theme – ‘Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems’.
The statement emphasised that breastfeeding plays a critical role in reducing infant mortality, improving maternal health and cutting long-term healthcare costs.
“Breastfeeding is more than a personal choice, it is a public health necessity.
“it is a proven public health intervention that provides unmatched health benefits for both babies and mothers.
“As health writers, we recognise the importance of consistent, science-based messaging and policies that enable mothers to breastfeed without barriers.
“Supporting breastfeeding is supporting life, health and the future of the children,” it said.
The statement lamented Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with low exclusive breastfeeding rates, despite its well-documented benefits.
According to the statement, the benefits include enhanced cognitive development and protection against common childhood illnesses.
“As health writer, we will continue to publish accurate information and inspiring success stories,” it said.
