A university lecturer has emphasized the crucial role of sports in curbing crime and fostering social development, particularly among youths.
Prof. Chris Abakare, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, stated that engaging in sports can help redirect the energy of young people from criminal activities to positive pursuits.
Abakare said that sporting activities offer a healthy outlet for stress, build discipline and create a sense of belonging and purpose.
“Sports is more than just physical activity.
” It teaches teamwork, responsibility and commitment.” These are values that reduce the likelihood of youth turning to crime,” he said.
Abakare said investing in grassroots sports infrastructure and programmes can significantly lower crime rates in communities, especially those battling unemployment and poverty.
He called on the government, educational institutions and private organisations to collaborate in promoting sports at all levels.
He stressed that such efforts would not only raise future champions but also create safer, more productive communities.
