Police in Anambra State have arrested a 43-year-old woman, Uche Okoye, in Uruagu, Nnewi North Local Government Area, on suspicion of child trafficking.
The Police collaborated with Officers from the Adamawa state to rescue 11 children—five boys and six girls—during joint operations.
The children’s ages range from three to six years.
Police spokesperson in Anambra, , Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest on Friday.
Ikenga said the arrest followed busting of interstate child stealing, abduction and trafficking syndicate.
He said the investigation revealed that someone abducted, stole, and transported the children from Adamawa.
“Unsuspecting members of the public seeking adoption illegally received the children.
“They paid a total of N1.5 million for the boys and N800,000 for the girls.
Ikenga said the rescued children were handed over to ACP Shuaibu Wara of the Adamawa Police Command for possible family reunification.
“The Police operatives from Anambra and Adamawa on July 15, busted an interstate child stealing, abduction and trafficking syndicate.
“The intelligence-driven operation led to the arrest of one female suspect, Uche Okoye aged 43 years and 11 children rescued.
“Authorities believe the suspect plays a major role in the abduction of children and the trafficking network operating between states..
“The Command is working on the information provided by the suspect for the possible arrest and prosecution of other members of the syndicate,’ he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu commended the operatives involved in the operation for their proactive and professional approach.
He pledged his continuous support in efforts aimed at dismantling child trafficking networks across the country.
The CP cautioned individuals and couples seeking to adopt children to do the necessary checks and follow legal procedures.
