NUJ to take stock of roads constructed by Soludo in Anambra

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Anambra State Council, will take stock of the conditions of roads done by the administration of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo in the last three and a half years.

The union disclosed this in a communique at the end of its July Congress at Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, Awka,

NUJ also resolved to compile a list of government contractors for effective monitoring of compliance with standards.

The Congress chaired by its Chairman, Dr Emeka Odogwu condemned some contractors doing shabby jobs in the state.

It warned that such conduct which wastes meagre resources available to government, also sabotages efforts to build a better society.

The union also called on government supervisors and evaluation teams to stop conniving with greedy contractors to execute poor quality jobs. 

Ngozika Estate flooding

The Congress appealed to the Government of Anambra State to immediately intervene in the persistent flooding at Ngozika Estate as property worth millions of naira have been submerged in water.

It frowned at the improper channeling of flood water in some roads which exposes residents to harm, calling for measures to redeem the anomaly. 

The Congress commended the Prof. Chukwuma Soludo-led administration for the efforts in making Awka a befitting state capital by ridding the streets of the capital of hawkers and beggars.

It expressed excitement about the transformation of Ekwulobia town, which has put smiles on the faces of many especially those whose property were demolished to make way for the infrastructure development. 

NUJ also urged for downward review of fees payable for accessing the facilities at the Awka Fun City, observing that the current prizes are quite high and out of reach of many families.

On-going electioneering

NUJ observed that number of candidates and political parties participating in the November 2025 Anambra governorship election offers citizens opportunity to benefit from multiple alternatives.

It described multiple alternatives as the beauty of a multi-party democracy and appreciated the robustness of the ongoing electoral debate.

The union interacted with one of the candidates, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was represented by Chief Dozie Ikedife Jnr, the APC South East Organizing Secretary. 

Counsel to young journalists

The Congress advised younger journalists to cultivate the habit of regular reporting and writing in order to horn their craft and attain excellence.

It emphasized the need for self-respect and professionalism among journalists, urging members to maintain a high level of modesty and conduct themselves in a manner that portrays the profession positively.

The council re-affirmed the time-honoured responsibility of journalists to act as the society’s watchdog in their role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm.

This it noted obliges them to hold the three arms of the government accountable for a better society.

Congress appreciated the Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Youth Empowerment Programmes, Comrade (Dr.) Nelson Obinna Omenugha, for the donation of a brand-new sound system, appealing to others to redeem their various pledges to the union.

It also extended condolences to the Chairman of the Council, Dr Odogwu, over the passing of his father, late Chief Samuel Agunwa Odogwu, and observed a minute silence in honour of a former colleague, late Comrade Paulson Okeke.
