The Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) in partnership with civil society organizations has advocated for additional reserved seats for women at the National Assembly.
WRAPA is also advocating for the reform of INEC leadership selection process, to strengthen electoral integrity and public confidence.
Its Coordinator in Borno State, Hajiya Yabawa Kolo, made this known during a 2-day Northeast public hearing on the review of the 1999 constitution in Maiduguri.
Hajiya Yabawa Kolo appreciated the leadership of the 10th National Assembly and State Governors for prioritizing inclusive governance under the ongoing review of the 1999 constitution.
She particularly appreciated the addition of reserved seats bill among other critical bills in the review and the need to have a reform in the INEC leadership, as well as balance in governance, social inclusion and gender equality.
The WRAPA state coordinator hoped that the bill when passed will position Nigeria for accelerated inclusive development.
It will also enlist Nigeria in the list of other progressive nations advancing in gender balance governance.
According to her, the bill has received broad endorsement from public consultations, town hall convened across senatorial zones and thousands of citizen’s signatures nationwide.
She urged the 10th National Assembly for accelerated passage, state adoption and presidential assent to the bill as a welcomed national development.
