RoLAC charges CSOs to intensify advocacy for improved access to justice

The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme, has called on Civil Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Anambra State to amplify the advocacy for the enactment of certain laws that will aid the promotion of justice for citizens.

RoLAC Project Coordinator in the state, Dr Josephine Onah, specifically appealed to them to join the clamour for the passage of the Criminal Code Bill and Correctional Service Bill in the area.

Onah who made the call during a planning meeting with CSO partners, stressed the importance of these organizations pushing for the passage of these bills into law.

Beyond the passage, she also charged them to get ready to ensure effective implementation of the laws when eventually enacted.

Onah said the bills submitted to the Attorney General of the state since 2024 is presently at the Anambra State House of Assembly awaiting public hearing.

She noted that the enactment of these laws would significantly benefit victims and survivors.

The RoLAC Coordinator decried the difficulty always encountered in getting protection orders issued to victims during court proceedings, urging the CSO actors to advocate for a reduction.

She furthermore tasked them to also advocate for speedy justice delivery, particularly on health-related issues and laws such as the Child Rights Law and Violence Against Persons (VAPP) Law.

Onah stressed the need for them to contribute to efforts by other stakeholders to increase access to justice.

Reacting, the Civil Society Organization partners highlighted some of the challenges they encounter in getting permanent protection Order for victims who need it.

They suggested different strategies to achieve this alongside advocacy visits to relevant MDAs critical in achieving speedy enactment of the bills.
