The Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has warned against establishment of satellite campuses by federal tertiary institutions without express approval of the ministry.
According to the Minister of Education, failure to comply will attract appropriate disciplinary measures.
Already, letters have been sent to executive secretaries of National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and National Colleges of Education (NCCE).
In the letter, the minister directed them to inform all Federal Tertiary Institutions under their purview for immediate compliance to avoid sanctions.
Alausa regretted that many of the satellite campuses lack the necessary academic, strategic, and infrastructural backing to justify their existence.
According to him, proliferation of unapproved satellite campuses undermines the integrity, quality, and sustainability of Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
He criticized some Vice Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts for diverting limited resources meant for improving existing campuses into establishing new ones.
Alausa regretted that most of the newly-established campuses are inadequately equipped, a situation detrimental to educational standards.
He said the ministry remains committed to upholding the standards of higher education in Nigeria.
This will ensure that every expansion within the nation’s tertiary education system is strategically planned, well-resourced, and aligned with national development goals.
