Agbedo Market traders to remain after renovation, says Anambra LG

The Nnewi-North Local Government Council has assured that traders in the Nnewi main market will not be displaced following the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of shops in the market.

Council Chairman, Mr. Echezona Anazodo, made the assurance during an inspection of the market’s redevelopment.

The council is also constructing new access roads and 200 modern shops.

Addressing concerns about potential displacement, Anazodo said: “Contrary to the rumours, we are not planning to evict any of our petty traders after the renovation.

“Instead, we are committed to ensuring that every existing trader is allocated a suitable shop.

“Owning a proper shop is essential for business growth.”

He highlighted the council’s efforts to modernise the marke.

According to him, there will be development of motor parks, public conveniences and  removal of lock-up shops from the market’s frontage.

Chief Cletus Ibeto, Chairman of Ibeto Group and an indigene of the area, joined Anazodo during the visit.

Ubeto urged traders to support the council’s modernisation plans, promising to assist in the development efforts for the benefit of the community.

Mr. Chukwudi Oranekwu, Chairman of the Agbedo Market Traders Association, also reassured traders that no one would be evicted as a result of the ongoing upgrade.

He pledged the association’s full support for the local government’s plans to enhance the market and boost local commerce.

In addition to the market inspection, Anazodo also assessed the rehabilitation of a nearby bridge.

He alongside Ibeto, inaugurated a newly constructed culvert at Nnewichi to control flooding in the area.
