Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture says it will soon commence exportation of African palm weevil and golden apple snail.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor stated this at the end of training and award of certification to 57 farmers at ADP centre in Awka.
The farmers who were selected from different parts of the state participated in the training free of charge.
According to the Commissioner, the milestone seeks to serve as alternative feeds to livestock, nutrition to human and income generation.
“The farmers will be provided with start-up funds.
“The ministry has ordered insects from China to expand the project of insects production in larger qualities in Anambra,” said.
Also speaking, Prof. Ifeyinwa Ebenebe, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, urged the farmers to maximise the knowledge to continue to improve.
“The young farmers will hit the ground running in the production of insects in Anambra.
“They have been trained, tested and examined before they were given certificates,” she said.
A trained farmers, Justina Igwe from Enugu state, appreciated the state government for the training.
Another farmer, Boniface Anajemba from Okija, Anambrapromised to make Anambra one of the leading insects producing regions in Africa.
