Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the U.S. has been elected the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. 

At 69, he becomes the first American and former Augustinian Superior General to lead the Catholic Church.

 Known as the “Latin Yankee” for his work in Peru, he is celebrated for his commitment to social justice. 

Elected after a swift two-day conclave, his appointment was announced from St. Peter’s Basilica amid global celebration. 

In his first address, he called for unity and hope, declaring, “God loves everyone; evil will not prevail.”
