Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State says his administration is resolute in tackling the challenges and engendering conducive work space that empowers workers to thrive and provide services to the people of the state.
The Governor stated this at this year’s Workers Day celebration held at Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium Abakaliki.
He said his administration has taken concrete steps to improve prompt salary payment and review of administrative structures within the service.
This is to ensure that the civil and public service system remains effective and productive.
“My position as governor affords me the opportunity to be conversant with the challenges confronting workers.
Governor Nwifuru declared that government is not owing gratuity and pension to retirees.
He said government has developed a system that reduces clears gratuity within one hour after a worker exits the service.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Professor Ogugua Egwu had earlier bemoaned the fate of workers in the face of economic hardship.
He called on the government to provide protection for Nigerians to reclaim their civic space for good governance to thrive.
The NLC chairman expressed gratitude of workers to the state government for prioritizing their welfare but urged efforts towards improving on transportation and housing schemes for workers.
Professor Egwu equally called for upward review of pensions to reflect the prevailing minimum wage.
Some of the workers decried the prevailing harsh economic realities in the country which have made a mess of the recently implemented minimum wage.
NLC presented awards to three best performing civil servants in conjunction with the Office of Head of Service.
Governor Nwifuru attended the event in company of his Deputy, Princess Patricia Obila and other top government functionaries.
