Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) can boost climate resilience, reduce carbon footprint as well as improve crop yields and land conservation.
A Global Board member of the Sahelian Institute for Bamboo Research, Entrepreneurship and Development (SIBRED), Mrs Diana Doheny, disclosed this in a virtual meeting.
The meeting was organized by SIBRED as a Centre of Excellence on Bamboo Agroforestry to Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network Global (GCSAYN).
GMOs are organisms whose DNA has been modified in the laboratory in order to favour the expression of desired physiological traits or the generation of desired biological products.
Doheny warned that as beneficial as they are, GMOs can be harmful to humans if they are not properly developed.

“Depending on how GMOs are developed, the effects can be both beneficial and potentially harmful.
“GMOs offer benefits such as reduced pesticide use, increased crop yields, and climate resilience.
“They also pose risks like biodiversity loss, resistance issues, and potential soil degradation.

In a welcome address, SIBRED Director, John Ogbodo, charged members and interns to be change makers at this critical time in global history.
“Climate change is disrupting many things including food production. Climate smart agriculture is highly recommended.
“I want you to key into the campaign. As GCSAYN’s Centre of Excellence on Bamboo Agroforestry, SIBRED will raise the bar on research, entrepreneurship and advocacy.
“ We’ll keep championing bamboo’s benefits until they’re widely recognized by our communities and government”
The Founder and Executive Director, GCSAYN, Divine Ntiokam, advised the staff and interns under the SIBRED-GCSAYN working relationship to give their best.
“There are lot to gain from this whether you are our interns or staff working with us.
“*As part of GCSAYN Global community, we engage in various global meetings and initiatives, offering staff and interns valuable opportunities and development.”
“So, as the SIBRED Director, Dr John said, give your best towards our success and you shall never regret working with GCSAYN,” Ntiokam assured.
