First official image of the Body of Pope Francis lying in state at the chapel of Santa Martha at Vatican City.

Honoring Pope Francis’ request, officials placed his body inside a wooden casket instead of a bier.

This had been used for previous popes’ funerals.

Pope Francis also chose to be placed in a simple wooden casket with a zinc lining, rather than the traditional three-layered coffins made of cypress, lead, and oak.
