Yiaga Africa has praised the transparency of Ghana’s recent general elections, urging Nigeria and other West African nations to adopt similar practice.

Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Mr Samson Itodo, stated this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja

Itodo said the transparent conduct of the recent general elections in Ghana is a huge lesson for Nigeria and other countries in West Africa.

“Nigeria’s electoral process is more complex due to ithe population size with over 93 million registered voters and 174,000 polling units.Election

“There are still valuable lessons to learn from Ghana to improve our electoral process,” he said.

Itodo highlighted Ghana’s transparent result collation process, where party agents were given time to verify results before announcements.

He said they used sealed ballot boxes with party logos to prevent tampering.

“The inclusion of candidate images on ballot papers as a way to improve voter understanding, especially in rural areas is commendable.

“Also, the professionalism among political parties. Nigeria must not rely solely on civil society and media to uphold electoral integrity,” he said.

Yiaga Africa deployed observer missions to Ghana’s December 2024 election, which saw John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress declared winner.

The delegation included Nigerian lawmakers and legal experts.
