Expert Calls for 20-Year Suspension of Governors’ Immunity

Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Mr Samson Itodo, has called for the suspension of governors’ immunity for 20 years to help curb political impunity.

In an interview in Abuja, Itodo argued that removing immunity would make public officials more accountable and deter misconduct.

“It is time to remove immunity for at least 20 years to clean up our political space,” he said.

Itodo noted that people have often used immunity to shield criminal behavior.

He questioned why governors should be exempt from prosecution while legislators only have limited immunity within their chambers.

Itodo proposed either scrapping immunity entirely or restricting it to actions within government premises.

He emphasized the need for stronger laws to hold public officials accountable, citing governors’ disregard for the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy as an example.

He also urged citizens to focus more on the performance of local and state leaders, not just the president, for better governance.
