IWMI Unveils Strategy to Boost Water and Agriculture Innovations

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has unveiled its 2024–2030 strategy to advance innovative water and agricultural solutions in Nigeria.

The launch was announced at the Africa Regional Conference on Irrigation and Drainage in Abuja.

IWMI Director General Dr. Mark Smith highlighted the strategy’s focus on research-driven, climate-smart approaches to tackle water challenges and support SDG 6.

Key priorities include watershed restoration, improved irrigation, water reuse, and farmer-led systems—aligned with African Union goals.

Smith cited successful initiatives in Ethiopia and Mali that enhanced irrigation, soil health, and youth employment.

He also emphasized wastewater reuse as a tool for sustainability and a circular economy.

Dr. Funke Cofie, IWMI’s Africa Director for Research Impact, stressed the institute’s commitment to resilience and climate adaptation.

She showcased Nigeria’s AWARE platform, which uses satellite data for flood forecasting and proactive response.

During the two-day conference, IWMI led five sessions on digital water solutions, farmer-led irrigation, and the water-energy-food-environment nexus.
