The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported a surge in suspected cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) cases.
A total of 315 cases recorded cross Kebbi, Sokoto, and Yobe states.
The NCDC’s official website stated on Sunday that the cases were recorded between March 17-23, 2025.
Of these, 38 were confirmed, resulting in 14 deaths, giving a case fatality rate (CFR) of 4.4 per cent .
Since the start of the 2024/2025 season, there have been 1,826 suspected cases and 151 deaths, with a CFR of 8.3 percent.
Children aged 5-14 and males (60 percent of cases) are most affected.
Public health efforts have been ramped up in areas surpassing the epidemic threshold.
A 65 percent decrease in cases compared to the previous week provides some hope.
The NCDC urges continued surveillance and public awareness to prevent further spread, advising the public to seek immediate medical care for symptoms.
CSM, caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, spreads through respiratory droplets and is common in Nigeria’s “Meningitis Belt” during the dry season.
Vaccination and hygiene are key prevention measures, while prompt antibiotic treatment is essential to avoid severe outcomes.
