FG launches initiative to reduce maternal mortality

The Federal Government has launched the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives (MAMII) to address maternal and neonatal mortality rates.

The initiative was inaugurated at Gwarinpa General Hospital in Abuja.

It provides free health insurance for pregnant women, access to free cesarean sections, mama delivery kits, and transportation vouchers.

Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Pate, said MAMII is a response to President Bola Tinubu’s directive to eliminate maternal deaths.

The programme aims to ensure every pregnancy results in a healthy mother and baby.

Done via integrating tracking mechanisms and addressing issues such as transportation delays and facility conditions.

MAMII includes a partnership with 66 teaching hospitals to provide free cesarean sections, with plans to expand to general hospitals.

WHO Country Representative, Dr. Walter Mulombo, praised the initiative as crucial for improving maternal and child health outcomes.

FCT Mandate Secretary for Health Services, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, assured that all pregnant women in the FCT would receive free health insurance.

He urged them to attend antenatal appointments, opt for safe deliveries, and complete postnatal care.
